About Us
Baga Saraswat Gyan Niketan, established in 2010, is dedicated to improving education in rural and marginalized areas, particularly for children from Scheduled Caste (BPL) families. Their "Green Color Identity" project focuses on bridging the educational gap for children lagging in basic literacy by using a micro-teaching method. By providing personalized attention in small groups, the society helps these children catch up before entering higher grades. Through this initiative, the society aims to create a lasting impact on underprivileged children’s education and appeals for support to expand the project further.

📊 Literacy & Population Trends in West Bengal
State: West Bengal
Literacy Rank in India: 20th
📅 Population Growth
- 2001: 8.02 crores
- 2011: 9.13 crores (Growth Rate: 13.84%)
- 2023: 10.25 crores (Growth Rate: 12.26%)
- 2024: 10.35 crores (Growth Rate: 0.97%)
📉 Literacy Challenges
Despite population growth, literacy growth has lagged significantly in West Bengal. The state remains marginal on the literacy map of India.
🔍 Key Reasons for Low Literacy Growth
- Seasonal migration of parents for work causes a 4–5 month gap in children’s education.
- Children from first-generation learner families lack home support and motivation.
- Parental apathy or ignorance about the value of education undermines children’s learning.
- Financially challenged families cannot afford private tutors—children are left behind.
- Low teacher-student ratios in government schools hinder personalized learning.
- Poor infrastructure in government schools makes it hard for backward children to keep up, leading to high dropout rates.
“To change this reality, we must build community-based education models that reach the most neglected children.”
🚸 More Barriers to Literacy in West Bengal
- Teachers are overburdened with extracurricular responsibilities, leaving insufficient time for core teaching.
- The syllabus at pre-primary and primary levels lacks age-appropriate, engaging content such as rhymes, stories, and works by notable children’s authors.
- There is a lack of continuous teacher training and effective, updated planning from the government—hindering the success of literacy missions.
🔔 Despite no official survey in 2024, the direction of West Bengal’s literacy rate hangs in the balance. Without active public participation, we cannot expect major improvements. But through our ambitious initiative—the Sabujer Barnaparichay Project—we aim to spark transformative change.
🌱 Purpose & Scope of the Sabujer Barnaparichay Project
- Targeting second and third grade students in government and government-aided primary schools who are falling behind in annual evaluations.
- Supporting children from backward and underprivileged families to help them successfully complete primary education up to Grade 5.
- Ensuring sustained enrollment and progress of first-generation learners up to at least Grade 8 in local schools.
- Organizing education awareness camps for illiterate or indifferent parents, empowering them to take an active role in their child’s learning journey.
"If this dream project is promoted, expanded, and executed well—West Bengal’s literacy map can and will change forever."
📘 Implementation Strategy
- Recruit one volunteer teacher per unit (10–12 disadvantaged children) with a nominal honorarium.
- Ensure each enrolled child has valid documents—Aadhaar card, birth certificate, ration card, and school records.
- At the end of the 2–3 year bridge course, provide an official completion certificate from the Society to students completing Class V under the 'Sabujer Varnaprichaya' initiative.
📣 Our Appeal
We appeal to the conscious and well-intentioned civil society to help us bring light into the lives of every disadvantaged child—in villages, remote areas, and urban slums. Help us bring them under the banner of 'Sabujer Barnaparichay'.
We seek collaboration with clubs, societies, individuals, businesses, domestic and international NGOs, and government agencies to support this noble mission of educational justice.
💸 Sponsor a Unit. Light a Future.
Start a unit in your locality by donating to the 'Sabujer Barnaparichay Fund'. The average monthly cost per unit (10–12 children) is just ₹1300 (as per 2024).
